This study demonstrated the power of the transgenic P. berghei system to predict drug-resistant Pfdhfr mutations in an in vivo parasite/host setting.
Although resistance rates of P. falciparum to antifolate drugs are high, cotrimoxazole-prophylaxis in HIV-infected persons was not associated with a higher prevalence of mutations associated with antifolate resistance.
Similarities were seen between pfg377 and MSP-1 alleles in children and mosquitoes and evidence of cross-mating between different parasite genotypes was seen in some infected mosquitoes, reflecting high transmission success of existing clones.
