Herein the hypothesis that hemoglobinopathies afford protection against severe forms of malaria by limiting exacerbated immune activation, via a mechanism that involves low hepcidin expression, is discussed.
To develop a new animal model for MA-ARDS, mice were infected with Plasmodium berghei NK65, and the development of MA-ARDS was characterized by increased lung weight, edema, leukocyte infiltration and hemorrhages (Figure 1).
Successful resolution of malaria infection requires induction of proinflammatory immune responses that facilitate parasite clearance; however, failure to regulate this inflammation leads to immune-mediated pathology.
