The MAlaria Research CApacity Development (MARCAD) Consortium in West and Central Africa is launching a new PhD and Post Doc programme in the thematic areas of Malaria Elimination or Control/Scale up of Interventions. MARCAD is a partnership of institutions sponsored by the Wellcome Trust working in partnership with the Department of International Development (DFID) and the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA). The University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD), Senegal is the lead institution working in partnership with the University Health & Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ghana; the University of Yaoundé 1 (UYI), Cameroun; the Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia (MRCG), and the Malaria Research & Training Center (MRTC) at the “Université des Sciences, des Techniques et des Technologies de Bamako”, Mali. The programme is supported by three European institutions; the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) & the University of Copenhagen (UoC).

MARCAD seeks to train African scientists toward building a critical mass for the control and the elimination of malaria, equip them to compete effectively for international funding, offer them international exposure, and facilitate their networking and collaboration with other institutions.  Fellowships will be held at one of the five African-based institutions. Three MARCAD fellows will be hosted within strong interdisciplinary teams at one of the five African institutions, one PhD and two post-docs. The programme offers:  

5 PhD Fellowships of 4 years duration, each providing: stipends, tuition fees, the costs of a 6 month training visit to a partner Institution, career development, training and support and up to 55,000 Euros of research funding to address a nationally relevant research question. 
10 Postdoctoral Fellowships of three years duration, each providing: salary support, the costs of a 3 month training visit to a partner Institution, mentorship and career development support and 83,000 Euros of research funding to address nationally relevant research question.
Applicants must be African nationals, normally resident in a malaria endemic country of Africa and have an intention to pursue a long-term career in malaria research or control. Applications from female researchers are actively encouraged. Applicants for a PhD fellowship must have a Masters Degree and applicants for a Post doctoral fellowship must have a PhD and appropriate research experience.
